Katherine's decision to become an actor was influenced by the time when she used to watch movies with her father as a kid. Katherine's favourite food is sushi. Katherine is 5'8". Kate's fashion hero is the French designer Hedi Slimane. The first concert Kate ever went to was Michael Jackson's Thriller. Two directors that Kate would love to get the chance to work with are Ang Lee and David Fincher. If Kate was not acting, she would likely be working in her father's violin shop. But if she could do anything, she'd want to travel around the world and get paid to surf. A few movies that Kate thinks are "damn near perfect" are Midnight Express, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (remake), and Cool Hand Luke. If Kate had to play an L Word character other than Shane, she'd want to portray a combination of Jenny and Alice, because she thinks those two characters have a lot of layers of depth and emotion that would be interesting to work with. Kate doesn't consider herself to be famous, nor does she believe her life has changed very much because of this so-called 'fame'. Kate keeps her figure mainly by surfing and keeping away from sugar. She doesn't really enjoy going to gyms, but when she does she tends to run and lift light weights. Kate and her L Word co-stars like to imitate people and prank each other to pass the long hours on set. One time Kate, Leisha (Hailey), and Mia (Kirshner) rearranged Ilene Chaiken and Rose Lam's offices as a joke while they were filming The L Word. Kate is an avid fan of music and likes to listen to The Killers, Metric, Cutcopy, and The Pixies. But her most favourite band is Led Zeppelin. Kate felt that her most rewarding role was when she played Cheryl Avery on Law and Order: SVU because of how well written her character was. Kate's idea of a romantic date is when she can be comfortable, laugh, and be honest with another person. Kate's dream role would be to portray Patti Smith in a script about Patti's life. Although she plays a hairdresser on television, Kate has very little haircutting experience and tells people that they'd be insane to let her cut their hair. Besides modelling and acting, Kate worked at a pizza joint and a grocery store when she was a teenager for a very brief period (her job at the grocery store only lasted 1 day). When Kate was just a little tomboy living in Philadelphia, she and her friends rode around on their tricycles and called themselves the Big Wheels Harley Gang. If acting wasn't her profession, Katherine would like to attempt designing. On the other hand, one job she would never want to have would be a car salesman. Although Kate really doesn't enjoy travelling too much, she has been all throughout Mexico and really loves it there. Kate has two dogs named Floyd and Captain that are terrier mixes. While attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, Kate starred and appeared in numerous dramatic productions including The Shadow Box, The Murder of Lidice, A Late Show, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Burn This, Alone at the Beach, Lovers, and Anna K. Kate was the spokesperson in a Showtime commercial for the Red Cross in support of hurricane Katrina relief funding. When Kate was told that Erin Daniel's L Word character Dana was going to be killed off the show, Kate was really pissed off. Even now, she still doesn't agree with the plot decision of Dana's death and she finds it very difficult to say goodbye to such a close castmate. Kate shares a very similar style with her alter ego Shane and picks out a lot of the wardrobe that she's seen wearing on The L Word. Kate learned how to skateboard and do her own skateboarding stunts for season 3 of The L Word when her character Shane works at a skateboarding shop as a hairdresser. Kate was in a commercial for Fleet bank in 2002 that promoted the bank's speedy service. Kate's all-time favorite book is The Beach by Alex Garland. In five words Kate describes herself as clean, forgiving, cranky, impatient, and shy. Kate's favorite sport is surfing, which she enjoys doing when she has free time. Kate loves reading and her favorite author is the late Augusten Burroughs. Kate's favorite word is 'cosy', and her least favorite word is 'no'. Kate's favorite actresses are Patricia Clarkson, Lili Taylor, Martha Plimpton, and Frances McDormand. On doing love scenes, Kate says, "A love scene, regardless of who you're doing it with, is an uncomfortable experience. It's not natural, it's very technical, and it's the farthest thing from sexy you could ever imagine. So I just kind of let go of a part of myself and just do it. I forget that there's a camera in my face and a director looking at the scene in another room and lighting and sound... I just have to shut all of it out and make this experience as comfortable as I can." Off the small screen, Kate thinks of her L Word co-stars as family. - "Kate: I look at them as my sisters." Kate has often been compared to Meg Ryan. Katherine's friends call her "Kate." Katherine sports four tattoos on her body: a violin on her lower back which she got after her father died, a bird on her left arm, the letter "K" on her wrist, and her life number on her finger. Katherine completed work on Art School Confidential, which is set for release in 2006. Katherine auditioned for the leading role of an FTM (Female to Male) youth in Boys Don't Cry, but the role ended up going to Hilary Swank. Kate attended American Academy of Dramatic Arts, NYC and St. Mary's Interparochial School in Philadelphia. Katherine is trained in fencing. Katherine is a first cousin to leading actress Gwyneth Paltrow. |
